About Music is a Microcosm of Life – Quick Practice Tip:

Hi I'm Vi Wickam, and this is your myTalentForge.com Quick Tip of the Week. If you face it in music, it's something you're facing in your regular life. What do I mean when I say that? What I mean is that music is a microcosm of life. Everything that I face when I play my violin is a reflection of who I am and who I'm being in the world. This may sound kind of weird and hippy and strange to you... But the truth is, I've been teaching fiddle since I was about 14, and I'm 41 now, and I've seen this 100 times. When a student is being timid on their fiddle- if I show them how to be strong and how to sand strong and how to play strong, that will reflect in their whole demeanor. I will see a change in them. I will see that they're behaving more strongly everywhere. I know that when I see that timidness in their playing that that's a sign that they are being timid elsewhere. When I have students that tend to be scattered and "chipmunkish", and they'll want to focus and don't want to be disciplined- I know that's how they're being in the rest of their life. I know that if I can help them become more disciplined and more focused within their instrument, within their practice, that that will carry over into the rest of their life. Now how valuable is that to you if you can develop a skill on your instrument and carry that skill over to the rest of your life. So develop discipline, develop community by playing music with your friends. Learn to listen. Learn to be strong and have confidence! These are things that music can bring into the rest of your life, and I really hope that it translates into the rest of your life. May you bring these things to the people around you. And teach them these same skills as you develop as a musician- that you share these skills with younger musicians, with newer musicians, and help them learn what you've learned. Have a wonderful day! Vi Wickam

Vi Wickam of Loveland, CO has been performing fiddle and writing music since before he could read. Along with his brothers and dad, The Wickam Family Band performed regularly on Blinky’s Fun Club, a nationally syndicated TV program. Vi’s fiddling can be heard on numerous CD recordings, including two of his own. He’s played with many different bands throughout the United States, and even briefly in England. Among his fiddling honors, Vi has won the Colorado State Championship twice, and been a finalist four times at the Grand Masters’ Fiddler Championship.
