About Irish Fiddling: Techniques & Repertoire:

Irish fiddle tunes are mostly 32 bars long and stay in first position. How hard could that be? But ask the leader of a top orchestra to sight- read a jig or reel and the results will probably be laughable. The notes on the paper are just the starting point, and without an understanding of appropriate ornamentation and bowing, the results will be disappointing to say the least. In this lesson I will demonstrate a polka, a jig, and a reel, and try out some of the techniques, ornaments and bowing strategies which are essential to breathing the life into these wonderful tunes.

This lesson was recorded as part of Strings Without Boundaries, a multi-style string conference operating for over 27 seasons. In partnership with artistic director Julie Lyonn Lieberman, recordings from past Strings Without Boundaries conferences are now available on myTalentForge.
