Hi, I’m Vi Wickam, here for myTalentForge.com. This is a free lesson for you- for all you out there in YouTube land, and on VitheFiddler.com, and on myTalentForge.com.
This is one of my favorite songs from a musical. It’s a tune that was made famous in The Sound of Music. It’s called Edelweiss.
Some people think it’s actually a historic tune, but kind of in the same way that Ashokan Farewell is a modern tune, Edelweiss was specifically written for The Sound of Music.
It’s a beautiful song- one of the prettiest songs I know. I’m going to be teaching it to you in the key of C.
I’ll play it for you once, and then we’ll break it down note by note. If you have any questions, post them in the comments below!
Here we go!
[…]
That’s Edelweiss… such a pretty song! I love it!
So we start out with [1- starting out on an E note…]. It’s in 3, so you’ll hear [1, 2, 3 – 1, 2, 3 – 1, 2, 3 – 1, 2, 3 – 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3…]
[1, 3, 3…] And then we have a little C arpeggio… to an F note. There’s our first two phrases [1, 3, 3, 2, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3…]. So we have a low 2- an F natural. [1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3].
Then we repeat… [3, 3, 2, 3, 2].
So you’ll notice we have a low 2 on the A string and the B string- which is a C natural and an F natural. [1, 3, 3, 3, 0, 1, 2, 2]. So that’s our second ending.
First ending was […]. And our second ending is […].
[1, 3, 3, 3, 0, 1, 2, 2]. That’s our A part- […].
Now to the B part. We’re going [3, 3, 3]. So just be careful on that string change… You’re not going to want to lift your finger off for that. […]
[3, 3, 3, 1, 0, 3, 1, 3, 2, 0, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3]. So that’s our B part. The B part is shorter than the A, and it’s really kind of like an A-A-B-A.
We have the A part with the first ending, A part with the second ending, then we have that B part, then we have another A part with the second ending.
Let’s do the B part one more time […]. I always want to do […], just for kicks!
And then we go back to the A part […1, 3, 3, 3, 0, 1, 2, 2].
Let’s play that one more time- whole song. This is Edelweiss! […]
That’s Edelweiss. I hope you’ve enjoyed it! And I will see you next time!
Lyrics to Edelweiss:
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever
